Walk The Commute 2014

\\ I know you're supposed to crop the photo to just get the logo and your face instead of the entire backdrop, but I liked the whole scene //

Last weekend marked the fourth anniversary of The Commute: the 24 hour, 52 mile walking event from San Jose to San Francisco that Derek organizes every year. I am usually a lot more involved in the event, either as a participant or at least a behind-the-scenes volunteer, but this year that baby distracted me from really doing either one. Instead, Emerson and I met everyone down at the halfway point to cheer on the brave souls that had already walked 26 miles and had another grueling 26 to go.

I'd like to think, much like puppy therapy at colleges during finals, a smiling baby waiting for you at the midway point might make you forget for a second that you have a blister on your foot the size of his giant head.

Huge congrats to the determined walkers that made it all the way this year! I'm always impressed with the fortitude I see on those streets, and love that Derek has helped start this movement.

re: The Good Life

Sometimes, even though you are on a houseboat and surrounded by a beautiful lake full of water, you just need more water. You know?

Not pictured - the amazing sunburned backs that both Derek and I suffered after this weekend trip, since apparently playing in Lake Shasta for Joy's 30th birthday is WAY more fun than remembering to reapply sunscreen mid-day.

re: Its Beautiful

We had a few visitors in town this weekend - Jeff the Dentist and K-Tron. To celebrate we took turns ignoring eachother in favor of our handheld internet devices.

We headed to Yosemite for a few days, and found ourselves uncharacteristically in a cellphone service-free zone. At first we didn't know what to do without the internet in our hands at all times. Then we discovered that there were waterfalls and monster trees and scenic reservoirs to explore.

Without our phones to distract us, we finally remembered what happens when you stand in a meadow at dusk:

Everything.

The Future of Camping

For our annual Valentine's Day camping adventure this year, Derek and I headed north of Calistoga for a weekend full of hot springs, sweaty saunas, relaxing massages and hours of yoga. It was the kind of place that made you embarrassed that you'd ever bought anything with a name brand or professed to like refined sugar.

We stayed in this weirdly futuristic looking dome tent cabin in the middle of the woods.

There was a little disconnect, because when you walk inside the dome tent of the future, the first thing you see is a headboard of the 90's.

It still made for a perfect spot to nap.

Happy Valentine's Day!

I Love You To the Moon

Derek and I are headed north for the weekend on our annual Valentines adventure trip (see 2010 and 2011), this time in search of yurts and hot springs. And one day, if all goes as planned, the moon.
